Description:

The herbaceous plant of Brazilian origin, Monkey- billed (Costus spicatus Sw., Costaceae) , appears more in the brejeiras regions and has several beneficial properties for the health of the people. Formerly the caboclos used it for aches, edema and bruises. It is also known as cane-do-brejo, cana-branca, cana-do-mato, caatinga, pacová, etc. It has an upright stem, up to 2 meters high and light green in color, its leaves are spiraled, invaginating and have flowers of various colors, in terminal spike. In natural medicine, the parts of the cane used are the stem and the leaves.

The aerial parts of the plant are rich in glycosylated flavonoids (eg tamarixetine 3- O -nene-hesperidoside, 3- O -nene-hesperidoside canniform and quercetin 3- O -hesperidoside). Other substances found in cane include: organic acids, phenolic compounds, mucilages, pectin, essential oils, resins, sapogenins, saponins, β-sitosterol, albuminoid substances and tannins. Its cultivation should be done in moist soils and rich in organic material.

The Monkey cane has diuretic and depurative action and can be used in the treatment of kidney problems, inflammation and to resolve cases of cystitis. The plant is indicated for cases of venereal diseases, as is the case of syphilis, menstrual disorders, leukorrhea and gonorrhea.
