Cola Nut - Cola nitida Ventenat

Origin: Brazil

Used part: Seeds (Powder)

Description:

It is the fruit of plants belonging to the genus Cola, from the group of several species of Malvales. The most common varieties of these fruits are obtained from trees from western Indonesia or Africa, such as glue, glue acuminata or glue vera. They are in all 125 species. Gluten-nuts are usually born spontaneously in the hot, humid parts of central and western Africa. The Cola nut also receives other names, such as: Sudan coffee, cola, mukezu, oribi, orobó, obi, orobô and abajá. Its seeds have bitter taste and great stimulating effect, being commonly used in African cultures, individually, in groups, even in rituals and being offered to visitors.

As it contains large amounts of caffeine and theobromine, the seeds are used by many people as substitutes for coffee and cocoa. In the past, cola nut was used for the manufacture of cola drinks and was then replaced with artificial flavorings to reduce production costs. There are still some exceptions that continue to be produced with seeds, such as Red Cola, Harboe Original Taste Cola and Cricket Cola (produced with cola and green tea). The use of gluten-free almonds spread in the northern region of Latin America because black slaves chewed glue to withstand forced labor and were taken to other countries for agroindustrial purposes.
