Cardamom is an Indian seasoning, cousin of ginger, which has properties like diminishing bad breath, improving digestion and serving as an aphrodisiac food. It is a berry that contains small seeds inside but can also be found in the form of powder. The scientific name of the cardamom is Elletaria cardamomum. It has a fragrant and burnt flavor and can be used in cooking in both sweet and savory dishes.

Cardamom was long chewed by the Egyptians as a means of cleaning their teeth and refreshing their breath. Only afterwards were discovered its medicinal properties, so it became part of natural products aimed at health benefits.

Health benefits:

The oil extracted from the plant warms slightly and serves as an excellent analgesic, helping relieve pains such as cramps and gas. It can also be used to soften feelings of nausea or poor digestion. This hot action is also considered a mild antiseptic and is a great way to relieve and treat throat problems, respiratory diseases such as asthma and bronchitis, and even relieve chest pains.

Cardamom tea is also reputed to be a great sexual stimulant, especially for men.

Good Herbal Remedy:

  • Fight bad breath, as it has antiseptic action inside the mouth
  • Take away hunger and fight against constipation, as it is rich in fiber
  • Relax the stomach and reduce the pain of gastritis, in addition to having antiseptic properties
  • Helping in digestion and fighting the gases, being rich in essential oils, such as limonene
  • Fight sickness and vomiting
  • Release the phlegm and fight colds and flu, by having expectorant action

  1. Add 20g of the herb into a cup of boiling water for 5 minutes
  2. Turn off heat and let sit for 10 minutes
  3. Strain and consume the tea

Cardamom can be used in sweet and salty recipes, as a substitute for garlic in the rice stir fry or added in candies such as puddings and jellies. You can also aromatize the homemade bread, put in the sauce of the meat, puddings, sweets, fruit salads, ice cream and liqueurs, for example. The best way to enjoy cardamom is to open the pods when it is time to use, remove the grains and grind or knead. Within each pod there are about 10 to 20 seedlings.

Although there are no reports of serious side effects from the use of cardamom, their consumption in exaggerated doses can cause nausea and vomiting. There are no contraindications. Always seek for medical advice before starting treatment even with natural products.
