Plant native to China, this tree has a large size (can reach up to 18 meters high) and carries this name due to the fruits it generates, having a star shape. While in the East it is used as a seasoning for seafood and meats due to its pleasant and peculiar aroma or even through its essential oil, in Brazil its main utility is natural medicine, which directs that the star anise is used in infusions and teas.

Nowadays this plant has been of economic and scientific interest, due to its use as a raw material in the manufacture of the antiviral drug, Tamiflu, used in the treatment of Avian flu and new influenza (H1N1).

Unlike the other anis, the star has a higher concentration of anethole in its chemical composition, thus being more effective for effects in various digestive problems, being, moreover, linked to the cure of influenza, one of the specialties of this medicinal herb.
