The jalapa is a climbing plant that can be easily found in the Brazilian Northeast. In preference to the warm and humid climate, the plant, also known as purgative potato, American bryony and purga of yellow milk, belongs to the Convolvulaceae family.

The plant, native to Mexico, has a climbing stem and alternate leaves measuring 9 cm in length by 5 cm in width that are cordiform and smooth, with a dark green color on the upper part and whitish shades on the lower part. Its leaves, of yellow color and fused petals, are solitary, and its fruit is an ovoid capsule and owns 4 seeds.

With tuberous roots, the plant is widely used in folk medicine for the treatment of various diseases. For these purposes, one should use the already dried tubercle for decoction. In addition, the plant, being very beautiful, is used as an ornamental plant, mainly in China.
