Also known as picão and picão preto, the tortoise is an herb very well known in Brazil, whose scientific name is Desmodium adscendens. In 2009, this plant was recognized as beneficial and of use in phytotherapy by the Ministry of Health of Brazil.

It also has some similar species and belongs to the leguminosae family. The plant, small and creeping, is perennial and stoloniferous, and has branches that can reach 50 cm in length. Its flowers are pink in color and are small, and its fruit is shaped like pods that are known as burr or sticks because they stick easily to the clothes and hair of those who pass by.
