Description:

The aromatic and tasty oregano has the scientific name of oreganum vulgare. It is widely used as a seasoning in our daily diet, through various foods such as vegetables, sauces, pizzas, meats, beans, eggs, stews and salad dressings. The plant can be used in seasoning, tea and even in oil. Oregano is rich in powerful medicinal properties, which are often not taken into account when we use it in cooking.

Origanum (name of the genus), comes from the Greek formula golds and ganos, which means "mountain joy", referring to the beauty of the plant that developed on the slopes of the mountains. The Romans had the habit of using oregano also as wreaths to crown young couples.

Health benefits:

Oregano is a natural source of antioxidants, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, fiber, iron and vitamins A, C and K. Due to its properties, this herb has been used for years as a natural remedy to treat a series of health problems such as headaches and stomachaches, indigestion, arthritis, menstrual cramps and other types of cramps, coughing and nausea. Oregano also contains fungicidal properties, so tea prepared with the plant may aid in the face of athlete's foot and other fungi.

In alternative medicine, fresh or dried oregano leaves, in the form of tea, ointment, poultice or compress, are used. This herb can also help fight headaches caused by nerve problems, bruises, dislocations, swellings, joint pains, flu and colds. In addition, chewed leaves or the diluted oregano essential oil may also serve to relieve toothaches.

In cooking, oregano is used as a seasoning in various dishes, mainly, and preparations of vegetables and sauces, pizzas, meats, beans and eggs.

Oil on the skin: Pass the essential oil of oregano on the nails or skin, along with a little coconut oil, helps to kill the ringworm and works as a natural repellent;

Steam: helps to fluidize the lung mucus and helps in the treatment of sinusitis.

Contraindications:

High dosages of oregano during pregnancy are contraindicated. Excessive consumption of the herb can cause abortions.
