The cumaru is a native plant of the Brazilian Amazon that is quite fragrant, from the seeds to its bark. For this reason, it is widely known as an ingredient for fava-tonka, which is a widely used flavoring in the pharmaceutical industry but is currently in disuse.

The plant is large, can reach 30 meters in height when natural, but when cultivated is a little smaller. Its bark is smooth and yellow, its flowers quite aromatic, small in white tones with pink tips and drupe fruit is yellow-green with a bitter taste. Its seeds have wine coloration, but they darken and turn black when ripe.
